HOW CHEVRON'S SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS MINIMIZES EVIDENCE OF CONTAMINATION

To avoid facing its environmental legacy in Ecuador in this litigation, Chevron has used a sampling and analytical approach that severely minimizes the extent, degree, and toxicity of the contamination that still exists in the former concession area.  In addition, Chevron is aggressively attacking the credibility and integrity of those who seek to scientifically document the negative health impacts of the failed remediation effort.  This analysis illustrates some of the many problems with the way Chevron conducted environmental science in the Ecuador trial, and the nature of the misinformation that Chevron presents. Scientists continue to monitor the technical methods used by Chevron to ensure that the company is held to account for any misuse of sound scientific practice.

Does Chevron respect the law and human rights in Ecuador? You decide.  On its website Chevron pledges to “conduct business in a socially responsible and ethical manner” and “to respect the communities” where it operates.  But Chevron’s defense in the historic environmental trial in Ecuador’s rainforest (“Lago trial”) can hardly be considered “ethical” or respectful of human rights.
