This letter to the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health from scientists David Egilman and Susanna Rankin Bohme, decries the use of science to manipulate or hide data. It was written in response to a letter to the journal entitled Elevating the Level of Scientific Discourse which was used by Chevron to defend its position relating to its pollution of the Ecuadorian rainforest and the subsequent health effects on the 30,000 residents in the zone the oil giant exploited for oil.

Does Chevron respect the law and human rights in Ecuador? You decide.  On its website Chevron pledges to “conduct business in a socially responsible and ethical manner” and “to respect the communities” where it operates.  But Chevron’s defense in the historic environmental trial in Ecuador’s rainforest (“Lago trial”) can hardly be considered “ethical” or respectful of human rights.
