Who We Are

Our Mission
The Amazon Defense Coalition is a part of a regional, national and global struggle for environmental and collective rights in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We are a group of Amazonian grass roots organizations and communities who have joined to defend and sustain our peoples and environment through unification of our forces and the integration of the entire Ecuadorian Amazon.  Our work is principally to strengthen local development through solidarity and conscious, responsible, effective and transparent participation.

The Chevron Case
We are currently involved in prosecuting Chevron Oil in an Ecuadorian court for its devastating pollution of the Amazon region which affected 30,000 rainforest residents. The case is potentially the biggest environmental litigation ever brought against a multi-national corporation. We have faced the huge resources of Chevron with transparency, patience and tenacity. We believe we will prevail, but even with a judgement in our favor, the damage done by the oil giant is such that it will take decades to remediate. The lives lost and the ruined health of many in our community will never, however, find remediation.

Does Chevron respect the law and human rights in Ecuador? You decide.  On its website Chevron pledges to “conduct business in a socially responsible and ethical manner” and “to respect the communities” where it operates.  But Chevron’s defense in the historic environmental trial in Ecuador’s rainforest (“Lago trial”) can hardly be considered “ethical” or respectful of human rights.
